Abstract

GAPS (Global Architecture for Planetary Systems) is a collaboration gathering all or most of the Italian exoplanetary community. It is a collaboration open to new adhesions. GAPS is the answer to the open call by INAF issued in 2011 in order to exploit HARPS - N that since then was mounted to the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo.

The better use of the best radial velocity measurement machine in the world require a structure that is able to optimize the schedule and maximize the results that it is possible to obtain. GAPS started its operation in August 2012 since then about 2000 hour has been assigned to the project (about 1500 of them were actually observed), shared in the several sub program that form GAPS.

The aim of GAPS is multiple and all the sub programs converge toward the understanding of the architecture of planetary systems.Relevant scientific results are being obtained on both the main guidelines of the collaboration, i.e., the discovery surveys and the characterization studies.

The planetary system discovered around the southern component of the binary XO-2 and its characterization together with that of the system orbiting the northern component are a good example of the completeness of the topics matched by the GAPS project. The dynamics of planetary systems is investigated studying the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect, while host stars are characterized by means of asteroseismology and star-planet interaction.

See you on Thursday in the seminars’ room, floor -1, via Ranzani 1, on time at 14h.
